Venue

Accommodation is at the same venue as the workshop – The Lake Hotel, which is situated on the edge of Lough Leane (the lower lake), 2km South of Killarney.

For those who are travelling from North America into Shannon airport, there will be organised transport leaving at 10.00AM on 13th May going directly to the workshop venue. Please inform John Atkins (j.atkins@ucc.ie) by 15th March your expected arrival time. Return transport will leave the hotel at 8.30AM on Sunday 18th May and will go directly to Shannon airport.

There are flights from Frankfurt-Hahn and from London Stansted to Kerry airport which is “half way” between Killarney and Tralee. Coordination to hire taxis from there to the hotel is possible. Most travelling from within Europe are expected to fly into either Dublin or Cork airports. There will be meeting transport from both these airports at noon on 13th May directly to the workshop venue. From Dublin airport this may take ca. 4.5 hours depending on traffic etc. From Cork airport it may take ca. 1.5 hours depending on traffic etc. Meeting transport for both these airports will leave the workshop venue at 10AM on 18th May.

Train

Public transport options include a train service from Cork or Dublin to Killarney (www.irishrail.ie) – on arrival a 2 km taxi ride to the hotel may be required.

The hotel is 2 km South of Killarney just off Muckross Road, N71, on its west side.

There is a bicycle and walking path from the Lake Hotel to both Muckross and to Killarney. The 15th century Ross Castle is to the west of the road between the hotel and Killarney; it is a ca. 20 min cycle from the workshop hotel.
The workshop hotel is 2 km north of Muckross, which is part of the National Park

Excursion

The excursion is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon 14th May, but is weather dependent and may be postponed to a later afternoon. Boats will depart from directly in front of the hotel to Innisfallen Island (in Lough Lein) where you will have a chance to visit a 12th century monastery. The boats will then go across the lake to Dinis cottage and provide a chance to explore the Meeting of the Waters. They will then go onto Muckross and an hour later return to the hotel. For a €1 charge and subject to liability terms and conditions, you will have the option of taking a bicycle with you and returning to the hotel by bicycle from either Dinis cottage (perhaps stopping off at Muckross house and gardens en route), or from Muckross. Some participants may opt to take the boat as far as Muckross and walk back to the hotel (approx. 40 mins). Note that the bicycle path from Dinis cottage involves uphill stretches in a wooded area.
If you want a bicycle for other times the cost will be approximately €15 per day.
