Europhosphatase 2015: Phosphorylation switches and cellular homeostasis

24 - 29 June 2015 | Turku, Finland

About the conference

Reversible phosphorylation of proteins is regulated by the opposing actions of phosphatases and protein kinases. Various classes of phosphatases have specific substrates in vivo, are highly regulated by physiological events, and perform critical and specific roles in regulating cell signaling. Phosphatase dysfunction has been linked to human diseases, making detailed understanding of phosphatase biochemistry and biology critical for future therapies. This EMBO Conference: Europhosphatase 2015 will discuss the function of phosphatases at the molecular, cellular and whole-organism levels. The conference will have a special emphasis on importance of equilibrium of phosphatases and kinases (phosphoswitches) in regulating tissue homeostasis in different physiological and pathological conditions. This EMBO Conference is relevant to all researchers studying phosphorylation dependent signaling in health and disease. Europhosphatase 2015 is the fifth meeting in the EMBO Conference Series on Protein Phosphatases and will be attended by the leaders of the field.

Keynote speakers:
Khalid Iqbal, New York State Institute for Basic Research, USA
Yosef Shiloh, Tel Aviv University, Israel

  • Phosphorylation switches
  • Phosphatases and tissue homeostasis
  • Phosphatase structure and function
  • Phosphatases in cancer
  • Phosphatases in the nervous system
  • Phosphatases and signaling

A number of abstracts submitted to the meeting will be selected for oral presentation.
Attendance is limited to 180 people.

There are frequent connecting flights to Turku both from Helsinki and Stockholm. However, in case there is a long overlay time in Helsinki for your connecting flight, we advise you to use the bus connection to Turku as described below.

Turku Airport (Lentoasemantie 150, 20360 Turku) – distance to venue 9 km.

Public Transport from/to Turku airport
There is a regular bus connection (number 1) operating every 20 minutes between Turku Airport and the venue from early morning to late at night.

Taxi Services at Turku airport
Taxis are on call at the taxi stand in front of terminal 1 during the scheduled arrival times. There is also a free hotline for booking a taxi near the terminal 1 entrance.

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport – distance to Turku 180 km

If you fly into Helsinki there is a frequent ExpressBus connection (approx. 2.5 h drive) between Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and Turku Bus station from/to both Terminal 1 and 2, see the schedule. Please note that there is a quick and easy change of bus approx. 30 km from the airport. The second bus waits for the first bus at the bus stop (Espoo-Ikea). Please remember to mention that you will be continuing your trip specifically by Express Bus to Turku when you first give your luggage to the driver (since there may be several buses waiting at the Espoo-Ikea bus stop). The driver ensures that passengers and their luggage are transferred to another bus. The bus tickets can be paid in cash and with the most common credit cards on the bus. The final stop in Turku is the Turku Bus station where you can take either taxi or local bus (to Radisson Blu bus 1 via market place). Hotel Seurahuone is only 0.5 km walking distance from the market place along Eerikinkatu. If you would like to take a 1.6 km walk alongside the river, you can get off the ExpressBus at the bus stop number 1842 in the front of the Turku Cathedral.

Turku Railway station (Ratapihankatu 37, 20100 Turku) – distance to venue 1.3 km

Port of Turku (Linnankatu 91, 20100 Turku) – distance to venue 2 km.

From Stockholm you could choose to travel to Turku on a ferry through one of the most beautiful archipelagos in the world. Daily connections between Stockholm and Turku are operated by Tallink Silja Line and Viking Line.

The venue is centrally located on the riverside of Aura River in the heart of the city. During the summer the riverbanks come to life when people gather there to eat, drink and listen to the music in restaurants and in old sailing ships. Along the river there are the main sights to see, e.g. the Old Town Centre, Turku Cathedral and Turku Castle. For more information about Turku, please visit here.

In Finland the weather can vary greatly during one day - first sunshine, then rain. The average temperature in June in Turku is 17 oC, but typically towards the afternoon the temperature can raise up to 20 oC or more. It is a good idea to come prepared with a light weatherproof jacket, especially while on the archipelago cruise. You can check a 5-day forecast of the local weather in Turku here.
