About the conference

Mosquitoes and other blood-feeding arthropods are vectors of parasitic and viral diseases that combined have a tremendous human impact, killing over one million people every year. The lack of effective preventions and the complexity of the disease lifecycles require integrated approaches that target the transmission systems rather than the pathogens alone. This biennial conference series was initiated in 2003 to create a forum for dissemination of novel and unpublished data. The conference is now a tradition and is widely regarded as a key event for the vector community. The highlight of the current EMBO Conference is the impact of environmental and climate change on the emergence and resurgence of vector borne diseases. This topic will be introduced in the opening plenary session and be the focus of one of the nine scientific sessions.

Abstracts submitted to each session will be reviewed and selected for presentation as a short talk or poster by the organizing committee.

Abstract: 150 words maximum+.



To defray travel costs and/or waive the registration fee, a limited number of fellowships are available to participants from low and middle income countries as well as early stage career researchers (including students and early postdocs).

Crete is served by two international airports: The "Nicos Kazantzakis" airport of Heraklion and the "Ioannis Daskalogiannis" airport of Chania. The latter is by far the most convenient airport as the "Orthodox Academy of Crete" is only 47 km (29 miles) away and it is well served during the summer.


WiFi access is available for free at the venue. There are networked computers available for freeat the computer room. Rooms at the OAC are limited and the majority of participants will be required to share a room. During the registration process you will have the option to specify someone as your roommate. Where possible, these requests will be honoured.



Chania airport

If you arrive at Chania airport, you could take a bus to city of Chania and then take a bus or a taxi to Kolymbari. You could also take a taxi from the airport straight to Kolymbari. The cost will be approximately 40 Euro. Renting a car from the Chania airport is also an option and the drive to Kolymbari is about 45 min to 1 hour.
Bus transfer to and from Chania airport will be organised for the afternoon of July 24th. Details will be provided closer to the time of the conference. Bus transfer from OAC to the airport will be coordinated at the conference.


From Heraklion airport

If you arrive at the Heraklion airport, you could take a bus to Chania and then a bus or taxi from there to Kolymbari. Taking a taxi from Heraklion to Kolymbari is not recommended as it is a 2.5 hour drive and thus very expensive. You could also rent a car at the Heraklion airport and drive to Kolymbari.
