Mitochondrial DNA and neurodegeneration

23 – 25 September 2015 | Sitges, Spain

About the workshop

Recent work indicates that alterations in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are a key factor in neurodegenerative processes. The main objective of this EMBO Workshop is to bring together scientists working on mtDNA regulation at the molecular level with scientists working on molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration with the aim to discuss recent developments and design new strategies to identify drug targets. Another objective of this workshop is to pinpoint the fundamental issues to be addressed in a future research programme devoted to identify the molecular mechanisms responsible for the alterations of mtDNA function in neurodegenerative disorders.

1) Interest to apply including a short CV, current research position and a statement of need.
2) Formulate one fundamental question that in your view is a key issue to tackle in one of the following research areas: A) Mitochondria and neuronal function, B) Molecular basis of mitochondrial DNA regulation, C) Mitochondrial DNA maintenance, D) Mitochondrial dynamics, E) Mitochondrial quality control, F) Mitochondrial biogenesis/mitophagy and G) Mitochondria in neurodegeneration.
The questions received will be raised at the beginning of each Workshop session to stimulate discussion and to design future research strategies. We strongly encourage applicants to formulate questions; even if they look too simple (simple questions usually generate the most interesting answers and motivate discussion).
Awardees will be chosen based on the novelty and creativity of the questions they propose and the relevance of the poster abstract submitted.
The application must be completed by June 15.  Awardees will be notified by July 10 2015 using the email address provided during the abstract submission process.

Other grants for SEBBM members

The Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM) offers five €200 grants for trip or accommodation to SEBBM members that are less than 31 years old to attend the Workshop. Candidates for these grants please indicate SEBBM membership in the grant application mail.

Hotel Calípolis, Sitges
Av. Sofia, 2-6, Sitges,

The Calipolis Hotel is right on the seafront in the middle of the Promenade by the entertainment areas and the most beautiful beaches in Sitges.
Sitges is one of the most charming and prestigious towns on the Catalan coastline and is only 38 km from Barcelona and 25 km from Barcelona El Prat Airport. It enjoys a special microclimate: mild and moderate with more than 300 days of sunshine a year which makes any time of the year a good time to visit. It also offers excellent transport links with the city of Barcelona (38 km), El Prat Airport (25 km), and the city of Tarragona (42 km).

Location and Surroundings
Sitges is a Mediterranean coastal town located on the Garraf area of the province of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Sheltered by the Garraf mountains and also because of its geographical position in the Mediterranean, Sitges enjoys a warm "micro-climate" that makes it possible to enjoy outdoor activities almost every day of the year. Moreover, throughout the year numerous events take place in this beautiful town, for example: the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, Carnival, the Festa Major, Theatre Festivals, The Barcelona-Sitges Vintage Car Rally, Harvest Festival, concerts ... the list goes on. However, one can also enjoy simply taking a stroll along the sea-front boulevard, a bike ride through the Garraf Natural Park or soak up the atmosphere on the famous Dos de Mayo street.
Four kilometres of beach with a delightful sea-front promenade featuring turn of the 20th century colonial "Indiano" mansions on one side and the sea on the other makes it a good excuse for a trip to Sitges.
