About the practical course

Proteins and their intricate network of interactions are the mainstay of any cellular process. Dissecting these networks at atomic detail is invaluable, as this paves the route to a mechanistic understanding of biological function and provides the first essential step toward the development of new drugs. Because of the challenges associated with experimental techniques, structural biologists have to resort more and more these days to complementary computational methods.

This EMBO Practical Course will present docking-based computational methods and related bioinformatics approaches, aiming at predicting how proteins interact with other biomolecules or ligands. Lectures will provide the theoretical background on state-of-the-art algorithms for sampling and scoring docking models, describe the use of low- and high-resolution information, and conservation- and coevolution-based interfaces prediction methods. Further, protein-peptide and protein-ligand interaction, as well as the young field of genome structure determination from sequencing information will also be covered to broaden the scope of the course beyond traditional protein-protein interactions.

Roughly half of the EMBO Practical Course will consist of practical sessions, during which the students will run computations on interesting biological problems. Finally, to encourage interaction between instructors and students and stimulate discussions, students will be prompted to present their own research and problems during dedicated sessions.

  • Accommodation for 6 nights (July 3rd – July 9th)
  • Coffee breaks
  • Lunches
  • The welcome reception and dinner
  • The poster buffet dinner
  • The conference dinner

Not included: travel to and from the venue, eventual additional nights and dinners outside the three organized events.

Selection Criteria

Students registered in a Master or Ph.D. program of a European university in structural biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics, computational biology or computational chemistry will be selected based on a letter of application and their tutor's recommendation. Applicants with a Ph. D. will be asked for a CV and list of publications.

Please note that students will have to log back into the registration system in order to upload your letter of recommendation before your application is considered complete.

We will maintain a balance between genders and between countries in Europe. Non-European applications will be considered if recommended by scientists actively engaged in the analysis of protein-protein interaction.

Abstract Guidelines

The abstract should contain the title, author list with affiliation and a text of maximum 300 words.

Poster Specifications

Please bring one copy of your poster, A0 size, portrait format

Payment instructions will be emailed to successful applicants.
