About the workshop

Until recently, eukaryotic organelles were thought to act largely autonomously, to create optimized environments for chemical reactions in defined cellular locations. With the advent of high-resolution (live-) imaging and novel molecular techniques, the picture emerging is one of physical interactions between organelles being required to coordinate essential physiological processes. Membrane contact sites (MCSs) are found between virtually all compartments of the cell. MCS formation and abundance is linked to several diseases, and research in an increasing number of laboratories is focused on MCSs to further understand their architecture and their function in immune responses, apoptosis, organelle dynamics, calcium- and lipid homeostasis. The molecular and functional bases of contact sites are therefore topic of the EMBO Workshop, which will take place 15-18 September 2016, in beautiful Chia, Italy. Our scientific program comprises high profile international speakers and two keynote speakers, who will discuss the topic from various angles, including associations to diseases.

The meeting will start at 6pm on the 15th and end at 1.30pm the 18th of September.

Località Chia
09010 Domus de Maria
Cagliari - Sardegna

A privileged destination on the southern coast, Chia offers one of the most unspoiled and natural sceneries in Sardinia, and is also scarcely frequented by tourists.
The crystal clear waters have turquoise and green tinges thanks to the particular colour of the sandy seabed. The long white beaches offer soft dunes bordered by centuries’ old juniper trees and with hidden coves, fjords and majestic rock formations.
The lagoons host elegant pink flamingos and the forests offer a splendid natural habitat for deer, wild boar and the golden eagle. Just 6 km inland from Chia is the small town of Domus de Maria. The village is set in a hilly area on the slopes of Punta Cuccuru hill, on the edge of the Sulcis mountain massif; another, smaller centre is the small hamlet of Baccu Idda in the area of Chia, a group of coastal houses overlooked by a nuragic site which is the object of an excavation and stewardship plan.
Above Domus, the great forest of Is Cannoneris is home to the Sardinian deer. From Punta Sebera, 979 m asl, your gaze can take in the whole territory of the Basso Sulcis, as far as Teulada, and on especially clear days can range beyond S. Antioco to the west and as far as the Gulf of Cagliari to the east.

All participants will stay at the Chia Laguna Resort – Hotel Village. The Village hotel cottages, surrounded by green Mediterranean foliage, are also ideal for a family wishing to spend a care-free holiday in Sardinia. The cottages were fully renovated for the 2012 season, with new furnishings and new external decor. Accommodation will be in a shared room. Single rooms may be requested at an extra cost.
