About the conference

This EMBO Conference series has become the key international meeting for  scientists investigating basic biological questions in regeneration and repair using a whole-animal or organ "systems" approach. It brings together scientists who have diverse expertise and use a wide range of models, from invertebrates to mammals, and who may not normally cross paths.

This meeting will address the cellular, molecular and genetic basis of regeneration focusing on the relationship between regeneration, reproduction and aging; differences in the immune responses between regeneration and wound healing; the biophysical basis of plasticity and regeneration, and the value of simpler systems to harnessing regenerative capabilities in mammals.


Coverage of these topics will highlight how a comparative perspective of different model organisms and thinking “outside the box” about regeneration and healing can propel our understanding of the field, stimulate discussion and development of new perspectives among attendees, and foster new collaborations.

The overall goal of this EMBO Conference is to significantly advance our understanding of how regeneration is coordinated in a whole-animal or organ system so that those who work in systems that do not regenerate may develop more effective therapeutic approaches to convert healing into regeneration.

Cancellations Policy

Should you need to cancel your participation, please contact the Conference Officer immediately. If notice of cancellation is received more than two weeks before the conference, all but EUR 100 will be reimbursed. No refund is possible if notice of cancellation is received less than two weeks before the conference.

Selection criteria

Participants will be selected on the basis of their abstract submission.
Selected participants will give their presentation in the form of posters or short talks.
A number of abstracts will be selected for short oral presentation.
The relevance of the presentation to the conference theme will be taken into consideration.

Abstracts should presented in the following format:
Abstract title - clearly indicating the nature of the study. Please type this in CAPITALS and bold type.
Authors’ initials and last names only (with presenting author first)
Author's institutional affiliations - listed as institution, city and country, separated by semicolon (;). If there is more than one affiliation it should be denoted by the symbols * + ~

The abstract text should not to exceed 250 words (excluding title, names and affiliations).   Submissions over 250 words will not be sent for review.


Abstract text for oral and poster presentations should be presented under the headings Purpose, Methods, Results, Conclusions.

Travel Bursary Application for Junior Scientists

A limited number of travel bursaries to cover part of the conference fee and travel costs are available for PhD students, Postdocs and new Principal Investigators. Please note: an application can be submitted to both sources but only one can be accepted.

Travel Grants

A limited number of travel grants are available for eligible participants who are selected to attend this event.

Applicants must apply for these travel grants by directly contacting the course organizer. Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer who will notify all eligible participants. If you have any questions regarding travel grants for a specific event please contact the relevant course organizer directly.

The aim of these grants is to facilitate the participation of those coming from labs located in countries in need of scientific strengthening (whether located within Europe or internationally). Priority is given to selected participants working in the following countries: India, Taiwan, South Africa, Singapore.

These grants are designed to cover economy travel to attend the meeting. Visa costs, accommodation and subsistence will not be covered by these funds.

Transport Information

How to get here:

By plane: The airport of Naples-Capodichino is about 90 km from Paestum.


Coach - Saturday 17th September: the pre-arranged coaches from Naples Airport will be run twice. There are 50 spaces per coach; places on the coach are on a first come first serve basis. We are not able to guarantee a place for you on the coach.
· Coach 1 will be ready for boarding at 13:45 and will leave at 14.00
· Coach 2 will be ready for boarding at 18:00 and will leave at 18.15


The meeting point will be outside the front of the airport at the coach pick up; please look for the sign EMBO Conference 2016 that the driver will be holding or it will be in the window of
the coach.


Coach - Wednesday 21st September: the return coaches from the Hotel Ariston to Naples Airport will leave after the conference close. Two coaches will leave Hotel Ariston at 14:00; each coach has 50 seats and places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.


By Train: If you arrival time does not fit in to the booked coaches or the coaches are full, these are the alternative options for making your way to Paestum. Please ensure you check your travel ahead of leaving.


Public Transport - Traveling to conference venue

· From the airport you will need to take the ALIBUS (stop is in the car park) to NAPOLI STAZIONE or NAPOLI CENTRALE. Please purchase your ticket from the newsagents located near the airport's exit; each ticket costs around €4


· At Napoli Centrale train station: please purchase a train ticket from a self-service machine (available in several languages); a second class ticket will cost around €6 for a single journey. The ticket you need to buy is to 'Capaccio-Roccadaspide' Station; the journey is around 90 minutes long. The last train leaves at 20:20.

· To arrange collection from Capaccio-Roccadaspide train station you will need to contact the Ariston Hotel yourself and let them know your arrival time; a minivan can be sent out to pick you up (this may be with other delegates also arriving on the same train). Please give the hotel at least 1 hour' notice of your arrival time.

Public Transport - Returning to Naples

If your return time does not match the coaches or you are not able to get a seat you can also use the train services.


The first train of the day from Capaccio-Roccadaspide is at 06:59 and arrive at Napoli Centrale at 08:08; if you need to arrive earlier than that, you will need to take the train from 'Battipaglia' station which has more frequent train services (starting from 05:41). Tickets are between €5 and €17 depending on speed and type of train. It is around a 30 minute taxi ride away (traffic dependant); you will need to arrange a taxi to the destination in advance.



If you are unable to use public transport, you will need to book a taxi. We would recommend booking this in advance, as it might be unlikely a taxi rank cab would take you from the airport to the hotel (90km).
Please look online for local taxi companies to book transport to the hotel; the Conference Venue has recommended the following taxi service:
