About the workshop

The principal theme of the EMBO Workshop is the Molecular and Developmental Biology of Drosophila. Supported by EMBO over four decades, this will be the 22nd biennial “Crete meeting”.

With the aim of promoting exchange of ideas and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, this EMBO Workshop brings together established and junior group leaders using Drosophila to understand principles of development, cell biology, neurobiology, physiology, genetics, evolution and population genetics.

The meeting format provides the time and atmosphere to promote informal, open dialog. Limiting attendance to about 100 participating Principal Investigators helps to foster close interactions between leading Drosophila research labs. The aim is to promote open sharing of data and ideas and to provide a rich forum for discussion of new research findings and conceptual breakthroughs.

Due to the limited number of attendees, the participants will be selected from the applications by the vote of the Organizing Committee.

Programme

The following schedule indicates the blocks of time allocated for talks and the timing of meals and breaks.

The meeting will last one week (Sunday-Saturday), with morning/afternoon (9:00-13:00) and evening (17:00-21:00) sessions.

As has been done in the past, the Sunday before the Monday start, an evening organizational session will be held to fine-tune the schedule of talks.

All participants are required to present a short talk on their work and to provide electronic abstracts summarizing ongoing work in their laboratories. Both the talk and the abstracts would usually focus on recent and unpublished research findings.

There are no posters and all participants attend all of the talks.

Topics:

  • Cell Biology
  • Neurobiology & Behaviour
  • Omics and Infrastructure
  • Patterning
  • Tissue Development, Organogenesis
  • Gene Expression
  • Germline
  • EvoDevo
  • Population Biology and Variation
  • Systems and Modeling
  • Energy, Growth and Homeostasis
  • Disease Models

Selection criteria

IMPORTANT: This EMBO Workshop is traditionally heavily oversubscribed (with two- to three-times as many applicants as spaces). Selection of eligible applicants (Principal Investigators only) is made by a democratic vote of the Organizing Committee. Thus, two very important elements of the application are:

(i) details of three recent and relevant publications

and

(ii) a short “motivation letter” outlining your research areas and interests.

Childcare Grants

For EMBO workshop participants with children, there is the possibility to apply for a childcare grant to offset child care costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at a workshop. Eligible costs include fees for a baby-sitter or child-care facility, travel costs for a care giver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please note that priority will be given to early stage researchers. A maximum amount of 500 EUR can be awarded per participant applying for an EMBO Childcare Grant. In order to apply for this grant, you must be registered by the abstract submission deadline.

The application process for 2019 will be managed by email.
